FASHION: THE OSCARS

He stands at a modest 13.5 inches tall, and weighs 8.5lbs, yet can take you from C-list to A-list in one magical, star-studded night. Each year, thousands of writers, directors, actors, producers, and technical workers gather in Los Angeles’ Kodak theatre, as millions around the world watch in anticipation the Motion Picture Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars. A nomination can single-handedly change the course of an actor’s career, bringing much buzz to their role preceding the awards. With millions of eyes and flashing bulbs overwhelming them, it undoubtedly puts on the added pressure of what and whom they wear on the potentially life-changing day. Nomination or not, these were the stars we thought shined brighter than Oscar himself at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards:
SANDRA BULLOCK: Winner for Best Actress in her performance as a strong-willed, wealthy Christian in “The Blind Side”, Bullock was looking holier than thou in her body-hugging Marchesa beaded gown. Accessories always kept at a minimum, Bullock took the fitting route of soft-red lipstick to accent her trademark smile. A far look from the unglamorous role that made her a household name in “Speed”, she looked nervously tranquil, uncomfortably at ease, and assuredly insecure; all in true Bullock, independent style.
DIANE KRUGER: Looking ingloriously exquisite, Kruger celebrated the “Inglourious Basterds” nod in a French vanilla Chanel Couture number, detailed with a black fur accent that circled her neck, waste and knees like a python. Having been described as "the face that launched a thousand ships", Kruger is a recurring red carpet favourite, and in genuine fashion managed to inspire all glamourista’s and make men wish they were Pacey from “Dawson’s Creek”. Always willing to take eccentric risks, she is a woman who knows her body, style, and the significance of silhouette. After all, we’d expect nothing less from a former model.
CAREY MULLIGAN: Though she didn’t win for her nomination in the Best Actress category, the British actress has certainly won the hearts of fashion followers worldwide. Mulligan gracefully glided down the Oscar carpet in a black Prada gown, which fitted at the waste and modestly puffed out below. However, the unique distinction between hers and many other princess inspired dresses was the short cut at the front of the dress, which exposed her thick-strapped shoes. A touch of mod-with her bleached pixie cut and chandelier earrings, Mulligan gave us all “An Education” in Dressing for the Oscars 101.
MERYL STREEP: The woman that has received the most nominations in Oscar history may have been blind sided so to speak by Sandra Bullock for the Best Actress win but was an absolute winner with her all white Chris Marsh ensemble. While taking precedence on Best Dressed lists is not exactly Meryl’s forte, the actress hailed as the greatest of our time was a stunner with a fresh faced, plunging neckline and notably absent accessories. Doesn’t hurt that Sandra Bullock said she was one hell of a kisser either. Get em’ Meryl.
MO’NIQUE: Stand up Comedienne turned Reality and Talk Show host turned Academy Award Winner does not happen everyday. Actually it doesn’t happen ever well not until Mo’Nique came along. As a survivor of abuse herself, the 42-year-old actress played an abusive mother in “Precious” that has landed her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Wearing a blue figure-hugging gown, Jimmy Choo platforms with a bundle of gardenias in her hair, there were no real surprises with her wardrobe choice or her win for that matter. No risks were needed because the actress that was once known more for not shaving her legs than her acting work now has received one the highest honors in Hollywood. At this point what is clear that regardless of the hardware Mo’Nique now has sitting in her house somewhere is that she is calling the shots whether it is her grooming habits or roles. Kudos!
While there wasn’t a direct theme or trend in particular that stood out and risks were pretty much avoided at all costs but the Oscar’s have always been about sheer glamour and celebrating actors of the highest caliber. Hair and make up was sleek, gowns were extravagant and the actors were awarded and recognized for their achievements. The Oscar is Hollywood’s equivalent to prom so even without nominations whether it was Jennifer Lopez in Armani Prive or Sarah Jessica Parker in couture Chanel, The Academy Awards not only celebrates achievements in film but also is a platform for fashion in its most extravagant form. Whether two hosts worked or were actually funny or if Miley Cyrus belonged alongside Hollywood`s finest thespians what is clear is that the fashion does steal the spotlight from the films but hey who’s really complaining? Avatar has already made enough money anyways.
